![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re not familiar with what Company of Heroes is all about, there are lots of inspired troops shouting wartime witticisms, grenades, Panzerfausts, tanks, and rockets. ![]() While this may be too steep a condemnation of the new feature, I call it out in this fashion because the title wishes to herald the addition – and in execution it is more adequately labeled a minor irritant. Some may claim that impending blizzards and low visibility introduce more strategy into combat, but in my time with the title the weather conditions simply encouraged stagnant game states where players were either unwilling to leave the safety of the fire or positioned to exploit map areas that no one would ever traverse. While this may be interesting and “historically accurate”, it almost feels as if snow was added simply to allow the title a significant change to exclaim “It’s a new game!” Certainly my experiences with the infantry-freezing blizzards and shattering ice are anecdotal, but in practice I feel they add little in terms of interest. The other major change to the title is that of weather conditions, namely snow. Line of sight changes and smoke add a good deal of texture to the grisly, intense combat on the Eastern Front. The minor alterations from the original title’s core gameplay are a mixed bag. Don’t expect a The Last of Us or BioShock tale here. The single player campaign serves its purpose as a tutorial to get players acclimated to a Company of Heroes style game, but that’s as far as it goes. I’m always puzzled to discover that there are players looking for a robust single player experience in what I consider to be a genre built on nothing but multiplayer interaction. It’s a good thing that the multiplayer features in Company of Heroes 2 are strong, because the single player campaign leaves much to be desired… For players looking for that. Players will not have to use XSplit or other software in order to stream their matches, this move has worked well for other titles with a focus on competition and eSports and I see this becoming a more prevalent decision in the future with new titles. It’s important to note that Relic and Company of Heroes 2 are embracing integration. ![]()
